Why Choose Natural over Chemicals for Horses?
Now, this topic I want to discuss is a very big one, so I'm going to break it down quite a bit. Let's start off with why I choose and prefer natural products and supplements for horses over chemical ones. I'm going to go back into history:
Hundreds and even thousands of years ago, domesticated horses were so much more healthier and happier than horses these days, but why? Well, you see back then, every product used for a domesticated horse was always 100% all natural, because chemicals back then didn’t even exist! And so their only option were natural products and doing everything the ‘natural’ way. And now, almost every supplement for horses is made up of so many bad chemicals!
For an example, let's look at wormers for horses. Wormers used these days (unless you get a natural one) are all filled with bad chemicals that actually do more harm than good. Chemical worming products contain neurotoxins, meaning, they are designed chemically to shut down the central nervous system of a parasite. But the chemicals will also have a negative affect on the horse's overall health. Same goes for other products like fly sprays, and shampoos even.
Most fly sprays contain a lot of really harmful chemicals in them. In fact, some fly sprays contain chemicals that are so bad that when applied to the horse's body, the spray can actually cause bad skin conditions and irritations.
Like I was saying previously, hundreds of years back, people didn’t even know about chemicals, and their horses lived happier, healthier and longer lives back then.
And now these days, people are too afraid of using "herbs" and "essential oils," and other natural things. They are afraid that well herbs for an example, will have a negative affect on horses, because they were originally used only on humans. But still, not a whole lot of people even bother to research natural products and different herbs and essential oils for horses. But I have been doing a lot of research on all these things and have discovered that it's a much better idea to go all natural for your horse. Besides, going natural is what horses need these days, and in the wild, they are “all natural,” aren’t they?
So I’m going to give a few ideas on products and supplements you can use for your horse instead of chemicals:
#1. Wormers.
All wormers, other than the natural ones, are filled with chemicals as I was saying before. Now instead of using those chemical wormers, there are a few supplements that I’ve found out actually do the same that the chemical wormers are meant to be doing; killing the parasites and worms in the horse’s body.
-Raw garlic.
Raw garlic is really good when it comes to killing parasites in the body- for both humans and animals. It is said to kill any existing eggs in the body, and prevent female worms from laying eggs. Garlic oil is also really good for horses, and garlic essential oil is used as one of the ingredients in some natural fly sprays, as bugs hate the scent of garlic.
Some people just feed raw garlic to their horses as their full wormer! It’s a really good herb for killing parasites and worms and can be fed either raw or the oil mixed in with pellets. (Not the essential oil.)
-Diatomaceous Earth/Clay.
Diatomaceous powder is definitely one of the best supplements to be giving your horse when it comes to killing parasites and worms. Diatomaceous clay is literally what it says it it; clay. It’s a type of clay found in the ground. It is 100% anti-parasitic and is completely natural. It’s works by attracting parasites, bacteria and viruses then absorbs them and kills them. It’s extremely affective. The amount to be giving your horse is 1/4 of a cup for 5 days in a row every month.

-Apple cider vinegar.
Since Apple cider vinegar contains B-vitamins, it is really good for cleaning the inside of your horse’s body, improving digestion, and killing parasites. Putting 50mls of Apple cider vinegar in with your horse’s pellets monthly is a really good idea, but I wouldn’t recommend only using Apple cider vinegar as the wormer. Also, Apple cider vinegar prevents stomach ulcers. Here's a good deal I found for buying apple cider vinegar, and it's for 473mls, and it's fully organic. Here's the link! #2. Fly sprays.
Almost every fly spray contains chemicals that could either harm your horse’s skin or affect something inside their body in a bad way. Natural fly sprays can be really easy to create, yet also very affective. Here’s a really affective recipe for a fully natural fly spray:
-1/2 a cup of coconut oil.
-1 1/2 cups of apple cider vinegar.
-1 cup of water.
-4 drops of garlic essential oil.
-4 drops of Tea Tree essential oil.
-3 drops of Peppermint essential oil.
-3 drops of Lavender essential oil.
Herbs are also a great way to go natural. They can be super effective, especially when it comes to killing and preventing internal parasites and worms. Here’s a list of herbs that are very affective with either killing or preventing parasites:
-Peppermint.
-Wormwood.
-Cinnamon.
-Cloves.
-Fennel.
-Garlic.
-Mugwort.
-Horseradish.
-Wormseed.
-Valerian.
-Thyme.
Here's a website I have been on that's created by a lady who is all about natural supplements and products for her horses. On this website she sells all sorts of different herbs for horses! Here's the link:
I hope this article helped you all, and I especially hope that you all choose natural over chemicals for your beloved horse, as it is really so much better and your horse will be happier, healthier and stronger because of it. :)
